Amazon.com Product Description
Featuring a color display with up to 65,536 colors, speakerphone, changeable faceplates, and polyphonic ringtones, this basic GSM phone is not to be overlooked.

Changeable faceplates and a brilliant color screen make the 1600 a great mobile companion.
Design
At first, the 1600 looks like a mild-mannered candybar phone. Looks can be deceiving, though. The 96 x 68 pixel display, which features support for 65,636 colors, gives the user a crystal clear screen, which makes it easy to type text messages and place calls. An internal antenna means there's nothing to snag in your pocket. The simplified menu and navigation with 4-way scroll key and easy-to-use key pad make for easier phone calls and text messaging.

Calling Features
The 1600's address book can store multiple phone numbers, as well as physical and email addresses. Meanwhile, the phone's built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are included, as is a vibrating alert. Ringer IDs let you assign specific ringtones to particular callers. Name-based voice recognition dialing lets you dial numbers with the sound of your voice.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The 1600 is a natural mobile messaging companion with support for text and picture messaging. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

Imaging and Entertainment
The 1600 is designed for flexible mobile fun. Full color screen savers can be set up to fit your personality. And don't forget that the 1600 comes with three of the following games: Snake Xenzia, Dice, Cricket Cup, Pocket Carrom, Soccer League, Adventure Quiz, Rapid Roll (selection is area dependent).

Vital Statistics
The Nokia 1600 weighs 3.0 ounces and measures 4.09 x 1.77 x 0.67 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 5.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 450 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM 850 and 1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Product Description
Features of this slim, basic GSM phone include a color display, speakerphone, changeable faceplates, and polyphonic ringtones.

5 out of 5 stars Overall good phone   March 29, 2008

The phone is simple and functional. It is fairly small and light, has good sound quality, and all neccesary text-messaging features. It even comes (or at least my package came) with an earpiece, which I have started using and is very convinient. The price is excellent.

The only drawback (other than the lack of advanced features, which I do not consider to be a drawback) is that the menu is somewhat unintuitive compared to the standard Nokia menus. Also, when I check missed calls, it always (or rather, nearly always) displays an annoying dialog saying "No new numbers." These are not major problems, but I would have preferred them to be absent.

If you are looking for a simple phone and don't need advanced features, I think this is a very good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased...Unlocked is The Way To Go   May 4, 2008

I bought this phone for my wife last month (April 2008) and she has been very pleased so far. We both have been using Nokias for years mainly because of their reliability, ruggedness & ease of use. We also are out of our AT&T contract so rather than be tied to another contract we decided to buy an unlocked phone. Well, we got it and charged it up and slipped in her Cingular SIM Card (circa 2005)and it worked great. She loves the compactness of the phone and the additional "bells & whistles" compared to her old Nokia bar phone from a few years ago. Don't get me wrong this isn't another iPhone it is very basic but it is all she needs. I too have an old Nokia bar phone and plan to order this same phone when I get a chance. Note: One nice surprise is Nokia includes a hands free ear piece in the box. Also, all the old chargers from my previous phone still work with the 1600.

5 out of 5 stars good basic phone   September 9, 2008
I wanted a cell phone that worked well as a cell phone, with clear audio and good battery life. This is exactly what I got with this purchase. I am very pleased and recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Nokia 1600 cell phone: a giant killer as long as you are not into audiovisuals   April 10, 2007

I bought my (unlocked) Nokia 1600 cell phone about five months ago. I had been looking for an efficient, basic and inexpensive cell phone that had to fit easily in my shirt's pocket. I use it with a prepaid minutes scheme in non-professional conditions. I did not feel any need for multimedia applications like built-in camera, MP3 player and the like. My simple needs were to be able to send and receive both vocal messages and SMS in a convenient way.

I have been using almost exclusively Nokia cell phones since 1998 as they operate in a very intuitive kind of way. As proof of this, the Nokia 1600 comes with a very simplified user's manual that experimented users can easily skip: once you buy it, you almost immediately get going.

I greatly appreciated the multilingual language support (mainly for English, French, Italian and Spanish.)

My experience with the Nokia 1600 is that it is quite ergonomic and features a superfine (and I mean: SUPERFINE) LI-Ion battery that goes on seemingly forever. This is a decisive advantage at this price point.

Hundreds of addresses can be stored (more than I'll ever need) and up to about 60 SMS can be stored.

Although colour was not a prerequisite, I enjoyed the standard colour display. Moreover, my tired eyes long for the large size fonts available.

The main drawback is tied to its ultra light weight (80,3 gr) as the unit's shell structure only ensures moderate durability if dropped repeatedly (although mine already survived quite a few stressful events!).

A minor drawback is that I really miss the "polite" Nokia ringing tone.

Sound quality and network sensibility deserve a solid 4-star rating. SMS use is good but not really outstanding and I would award this feature three stars.

I also dig the joint alarm clock and reminder options as my vintage memory cells keep worsening.

Another interesting feature of this model is the ability to lock the phone with a five-digit secret code, as I like to enjoy a little bit of privacy.

I should also add that I still own two other Nokia cell phones: an obsolete, but damn solid, Nokia 3410 (that I keep as an occasional back-up) and a very good, more upscale Nokia 6101, which I exclusively use for professional applications. Three years ago, I offered a still older Nokia 3210 to a friend of mine and it is still performing very well.

If all you will ever need from a cell phone is the possibility to conveniently make or receive contacts with other people, this inexpensive Nokia 1600 unit is the right choice for you!

Given the price/quality relationship, I feel that a solid 4-star rating is mandatory.
