Amazon.com Product Description Optimized for photography, navigation, and Internet connectivity, the Nokia N82 smartphone enables you to travel the globe with its quad-band GSM connectivity and easily stay connected with friends and business colleagues. It features a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and built-in GPS and Nokia Maps software for easy spelunking wherever you may find yourself. The phone also offers Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g) for accessing open networks at home or on the road at hotspots as well as compatibility with 2100 MHz 3G networks (in Europe and Asia). Other features include Bluetooth connectivity for communication headsets, 100 MB of onboard memory, MicroSD expansion, FM radio, digital audio player, Symbian OS, and up to 4.3 hours of GSM talk time.
The pictorially oriented N82 features a 5-megapixel camera, powerful Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss optics. | This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider. When paired with a compatible 3G network that uses UMTS 2100 MHz connectivity (found in Europe and Asia), you'll enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless services with speeds up to 384 Kbps--from data connectivity to your office to multimedia streaming, and take advantage of simultaneous voice and data services. In the United States and foreign territories where 2100 MHz 3G networks are not available, you'll continue to receive data service via EDGE network (depending on network compatibility). Phone Features The Nokia N82 has a large 2.4-inch screen with a 240 x 320-pixel resolution and support for 16.7 million colors. It comes with a new content driven 3D multimedia menu and includes a convenient orientation sensor that rotates the user interface automatically between horizontal and portrait mode. It's based on S60 software operating on the Symbian OS, enabling you to personalize the N82 by choosing from the Ovi family of Nokia internet services, including Nokia Music Store, N-Gage games and Nokia Maps. The phone has a 100 MB internal memory, and it's expandable via MicroSD memory cards (up to 4 GB in size). The Nokia N82 actually has two cameras, a high resolution camera on the back of the device (the main camera in landscape mode) and a lower resolution camera on the front (CIF resolution, 352 x 288). The main 5-megapixel camera on the back of the N95 supports an image capture resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels, and it features a focus range of 10cm (4 inches) to infinity, up to a 20x digital zoom for still images, and a Xenon flash. (Note that the low-resolution camera on the front can provide two-way video calling; however, at this time no U.S. carrier offers this service.) Fast camera activation, autofocus with a dedicated autofocus assist lamp, fast reloading between shots and DVD-like quality video capture make it a truly convenient and credible tool for capturing and telling your life stories. You can also capture crisp videos at up to a 640 x 480-pixel resolution at 30 frames per second (fps) in 24-bit/16.7-million colors. Images are saved as JPEG files while videos are recorded in the MPEG-4 file format with the .mp4 file extension, or in the 3GPP file format with the .3gp file extension (sharing quality). Photos and video clips can be enjoyed on a compatible television thanks to the device's TV out feature and support for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology.
Find your way with navigation and routing thanks to built-in A-GPS and Nokia Maps. | With high speed Wi-Fi connectivity and one-click upload to online communities, the N82 makes sharing your experiences and discoveries easy. When viewing a picture or video, simply one press of a button starts uploading it while you carry on using the other phone functions. The integrated A-GPS and preinstalled Nokia Maps help you explore and locate new places, whether in another country or just around the corner. With access to more than 15 million points of interest, you can locate and navigate to the most interesting sights, bars or restaurants wherever you are. You can also send map excerpts and routes to friends by MMS or save map screen shots to the gallery. Take your media with you when you're out on the go. With the built-in RealPlayer software, you can stream and download your favorite content onto the N82, giving you access to the latest news, sports, and entertainment updates. Or sync up with your PC and play the music and movies stored on your hard drive. It's compatible with a wide variety of digital audio formats (including MP3, AAC, WMA, and secure WMA). You can listen to your favorite radio programs via the integrated FM radio, and the Visual Radio feature lets you see information about songs or artists. This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology means that the Nokia N82 will discover, interact with, and control other compatible home electronic devices. This includes PCs, media centers, home entertainment systems, new smart appliances, home automation systems, networked peripherals, and Web-based services. With compatible equipment, you can stream video from your Nokia device directly to your TV, or hear music tracks stored on your PC through your living room's sound system. Other features include: - Voice dialing with speaker independent name dialing (SIND) and voice commands
- Messaging: email (SMTP, IMAP4, POP3), MMS, SMS

N95, Improved February 15, 2008 35 out of 36 found this review helpful
I suppose it is only a matter of time before Nokia releases the N82, given the fact that as far as technical specification goes, the N82 is almost a clone of the N95, minus the sliding mechanism.
The software (and possibly hardware) for the N82 has improved, in terms of responsiveness and speed over the 2006-2007 N series models. The screen of the N82, although not the sharpest among the N-series, serves well as a view finder and as a small display for internet surfing. The display rotates according to the orientation of the screen, but if you find this feature disruptive (say if you're lying down while typing), you can always turn the feature off.
In general, the N82's responses are faster than that of the N95, probably due to the fact that it has a simpler electronic architecture (mono-block and smaller screen). There is very little delay when you switch the camera on and off, and the capture time is very short compared to most of the N-series in the market.
The music player built into the N82 is identical to that of the N95, but due to the above advantage, the player never seem to experience any hang-ups when it's used with other applications running in the background.
The built-in GPS feature is a bit of a headache to use due to the smaller screen, and possibly even smaller GPS receiver. I've never needed the voice guidance feature for my GPS receiver before, so not having it is fine with me. To me, the GPS feature has always been more of a gimmick for Nokia to push their N-series devices to the consumer rather than benefiting them in anyway. Because unless you can run faster than Carl Lewis, the GPS locator will not display any movements on the phone screen at all so it won't be able to tell you if you're walking in the wrong direction until you've travelled a few hundred meters down the wrong way.
The built-in digital camera comes with Carl-Zeiss optics at 5 magepixel like the N95, with added Auto Focus assist lamp (a super bright red LED) and a bright Xenon flash. The photos, although do not appear to be much larger (in byte size that is) than the N95's, seems to have less heavy compression artifacts and the flash distribution seems to be well balanced for subjects and objects over 1.5 meters away.
This device is a must have (if you can get over the overly titanium-silver look of the device) for anyone who hates sliding phones but can't live without all the crazy features that comes with the N95 and the N95-8G. The 3.5mm multifunction socket works the same way as the N95, giving you video output, audio output and headset functions as well. I'm not sure at this point just how powerful the supplied battery is, but the phone definately seems to be beating the N95 when it comes to power consumption.. the N95 loses half of it's battery charge halfway through the day, while the N82 appears to be able to stay at full bar 12 hours after its initial charging. Impressive.
Great phone December 22, 2007 26 out of 26 found this review helpful
I was contemplating buying the Nokia N95 8G, but when I saw the specs for this phone I changed my mind - mainly due to the use of microsdhc memory cards on the N82. Although the phone only shipped with a 2G card, I theoretically could expand up to 8G at the present time, and possibly higher when flash memory is developed further. I guess the phone doesn't look all that interesting - silver on silver, candybar style, average size screen - but at the same time it certainly isn't an eyesore. Go to Nokia for the full specs, but I thought I'd mention a few things I've found handy over other phones of the same ilk. 1. Sliding lens cover protection. 2. GPS, with added voice nagivation. Voice does come at a price, but in the scheme of things it's negligible. I'm not sure text-to-speech is available for this model, and I haven't been able to download it as yet. 3. Having the speakers on one side makes it easier to listen to music or videos - although it should be noted this phone will not stand up on its own, it needs something to rest on. 4. 3.5mm generic headphone jack on top of unit. 5. Music sounds great through headphones, car cassette etc. A nice touch is that if you happen to be playing music in the car through, say, a cassette adapter and the phone rings, you can answer the call using the car's sound system, hang up, and the music will resume, gradually increasing to previous volume - nice touch. 6. Excellent 5mp camera with Xenon flash, plus front vga camera for self-portraits etc. Of course there's the usual slideshow functions, zooming, emailing. 7. 3G networking.
I guess the only real glitch I've experienced thus far (only had phone for 5 days) is getting my iTunes ACC encoded songs onto MusicPlayer. If you use the PC Suite software that comes on CD, you'll need to download WMP 11, as there's an issue with protected files. To do this you'll also have to download Microsoft's Genuine Advantage Support (WGA) -which I wasn't that keen on. The way around this problem is quite simple. Instead of using PC Suite when loading songs, use Data Transfer. No probs with protection, WGA etc. Music goes on seamlessly and sounds great.
If I feel the need to add anything further on the N82, I'll update at a later time. All in all, I think one of the best phones of its type on the market today.
The best phone in the world December 19, 2007 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I did not buy this product here. But buy many products on amazon. I was one of the first to buy. I have been following the Nokia news for some time with google alerts and google searches. I had thought I was going to buy the nokia n95 but when I read the specks on this product I was sold. I watched every day online for it's release and where to buy it. I bought it from a website offering it as a pre-order. I have been amazed and completely satisfied with this phone. I do charge it nightly but have sometimes forgotten and it makes it though half of the next day. I will probably purchase an extra battery for emergencies. This phone does everything though. The maps are fantastic you don't need to pay for the guides that is a waste of money but pay for the navigation it is great. I got a clip to my air vent and it stays in tight and it works almost as good as a tom tom. The voice guidance only has a few commands but the maps are perfect and I don't need many details besides turn right and left and when. The road names are clearly marked on the map. There are many map options such as color and 2D and 3D and even an option for traveling by foot or boat. The music player is great and the headphones that come with the product I think are the neatest thing. They wrap around your neck so if you pull out an earpiece it doesn't fall all the way down. It has a button for volume attached to the headset. I love also that it is a separate normal headphone jack. So the phone rings normal not through the headphones and you can easily mute the music to answer the phone. You can also listen to the music while using your navigator and it will work with your car bluetooth amazing amazing amazing. I'm going to Italy next summer and can't wait to try the maps there because it will work pretty much anywhere in the world unlike my husbands navigator. The alarm clock is also really cool I can set it and never set it again. I set it for one time for mon-fri another time for sat and another time for sun and set it to repeat the pattern every week, and you don't have to work mon-fri you can set your work week for anything and you don't have to remember to turn it on it will go off even if you left it in your pants pocket the night before and it will play any tune you want it too and you can change the tune for different days. I also like the calendar it has so many features. I love that it shows my meetings for the week right in the main window as a reminder though out the week without having to go to the calendar page. The calendar is easy to use and a life saver. I also use the excel and word apps. I did end up upgrading to a higher functional Quick Office so I could edit my documents on the phone. The one that comes with the phone only allows you to view them not edit them. The camera is cool. I probably will sell my digital elf because this thing does enough for me. It has plenty of settings and functionality. I love the life blog application. It allows you to view your pictures on a time line by the date they were taken. I love it. The N-Gage application is still to be announced so I know nothing about that yet, but everything that I know about the phone makes every phone including blackberry and iphone look like junk and make me wonder why America is so behind the times. I can't even walk into cell phone stores anymore with out feeling disgusted by the cheap junk they have to offer at the $200-$600 range. This phone is pricy but worth every penny. I got it for under $600 and there are many web sites selling it at that price. You just have to do a little research. I'm not going to tell you where because I do love Amazon. I have family that work at Amazon and would not want you to shop elsewhere. I also like the look of the phone it is not pretentious. You wouldn't know by looking at it all that it can do. I work in a school and cell phone theft is a popular gang related activity. I had one stolen before but am careful now and my last phone was never stolen. Students have seen my phone and do not know all that it can do. It just looks like an ordinary phone. It's not unattractive just it has design simplicity. I like that. It is light weight and fits easily in your pocket.
Screen scratches pretty easily April 10, 2008 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I'm a big fan of this phone (5 stars easy!); just wanted to warn others that the screen scratches really easily, so be sure to get a screen protector.
Had many Nokia phones; this is by far the best. April 28, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
My previous Nokia products include the 7610, 6103, 5300, N90, N91, N73, N95 8GB, and the 770 Internet Tablet. This is by far the best one for me. The biggest difference between the N95 8GB and the N82 is that mine(N82) is equipped with the Xenon Flash, while the N95 8GB has LED, which is far dimmer, but can be used at night for video, which my bulb can't. To keep it short, if you won't let go of your Navigation device in your car or your iPod, or would rather use many devices instead of one, then this product is not for you. Here is a short list of what I HAVE ACTUALLY DONE WITH THIS PHONE.
1. Free Nokia Maps App with A-GPS (radio towers and GPS to lock on location within 10 seconds, tops) 2. Superb music and video app, standard size headset jack, my iPod headset sounds great on this phone 3. Best pictures ever, best video(30fps), and TV-OUT! Watch movies, recorded clips on my big screen! 4. N-Gage gaming platform! I have been playing various games against other people across the globe. 5. Battery lasts two days with heavy use, right now it's playing Newsweek Podcast downloaded over WiFi. 6. Youtube in the browser, not on a separate app like the iPhone. This is a Real Browser! 7. Post directly to Flickr. No special address to send to, just take the pic, choose post to web, select Flickr. 8. It geo-tags for me, when the pic is taken.
Best phone for me, but not for everyone else. I did a lot of research before buying. Go to Flickr, type in N82, and check out the best camera phone hands down!
